Tottenham to add Besiktas full-back’s signing this summer

Ridvan Yilmaz

Tottenham Hotspur are still looking to conduct more business in the summer transfer market. Spurs have already signed two players, Ivan Perisic and Yves Bissouma but will further add more players. As promised, the North Londoners are fully backing Antonio Conte in the transfer market. The Italian now wants to add defensive depth to his squad for next season. Tottenham as a result have planned the signing of Besiktas full-back Ridvan Yilmaz.

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Tottenham are impressed by the 21-year-old Besiktas full-back and wants to acquire his services. However, Spurs were waiting for Conte’s approval for the move, which they have now received. Yilmaz who plies his trade on the left flank featured in 33 games for Besiktas last season.

On the other hand, while Tottenham still have two left-backs in Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon it remains to be seen how the Besiktas left-back would fit in. The two full-backs fiercely fought for a starting place last season with none coming out on top as the clear winner. Both enjoyed almost the same number of games under Conte last season, with Reguilon playing 20 and 19 to Sessegnon’s name.

Is Tottenham planning for the future with Besiktas left-back’s signing?

Yilmaz has just one year left on his current Besiktas deal as Tottenham have come calling. Further on, as Conte has given green-light to the move, Spurs will be eager to wrap up a deal and so will Yilmaz. The Turkish international played in 27 of Besiktas’ 38 Super Lig games last season. He helped the club with 3 goals and 4 assists to his name in those 27 appearances.

However, with Reguilon and Sessegnon in hot form, Yilmaz would find it difficult to break into the starting lineup. Both Reguilon and Sessegnon have massively developed under Conte, giving the Italian a headache in the selection. Furthermore, Sessegnon has more experience in English football than both Reguilon and Yilmaz. The 22-year-old has 153 appearances combined in the Premier League and EFL Championship (with Fulham).

But Reguilon seems to be the preferred one as he has impressed consistently since joining in 2020. Sessegnon on the other hand-signed in 2019 and spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. Though he proved his mettle with Tottenham last season, he would still consider deputy to Reguilon. Amidst such a situation, Tottenham could shape their potential Besiktas signing for the future.

Yilmaz could be Tottenham’s ‘one for the future’ player. Though Spurs might not need this signing now, they could reap its benefits in the future. Tottenham may have plans of loaning the incoming Besiktas man to a fellow Premier League team or even the Championship. Yilmaz would heavily benefit from such a move which could then ease him into the Tottenham team.
