Tottenham monitoring Monaco’s Badiashile for a possible swap deal

Benoît Badiashile

Tottenham’s search for a new defender for Antonio Conte has now taken them to Ligue 1. Spurs are keeping an eye on AS Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile for a transfer. However, the 21-year-old center-back has emerged as a new name on Tottenham’s list, which already includes a host of targets. But Tottenham are reportedly confident of striking a deal for Badiashile this summer.

It is no secret that Conte wanted his former associate Alessandro Bastoni from Inter at Tottenham. However, Bastoni had no interest in leaving Inter and hence rejected a move. Further on, Spurs checked RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol but the Bundesliga made their stance clear on retaining the center-back. Other players in Clement Lenglet and Pau Torres are also in the discussion, but Tottenham prioritizes Badiashile.

Badiashile is helmed as one of the most talented defenders across Europe’s top five leagues. Moreover, the defender would easily fit in Conte’s system if a deal is agreed between the two clubs.

Tottenham could sacrifice Sanchez for Badiashile

While Monaco values Badiashile at £40 million, Tottenham could avoid paying the hefty amount. According to multiple reports, Monaco have shown interest in signing Spurs’ Davinso Sanchez. As a result, the North Londoners could negotiate a swap deal including Sanchez and Badiashile.

Sanchez joined Tottenham in 2017 for a then-record fee of £42 million. However, the Colombia center-back has failed to make a mark at Tottenham and is now wanted by Monaco who rates him highly. Furthermore, Conte would be happy as well to receive Badiashile as Sanchez’s replacement. At just 21, Badiashile could become a solid foundation of Tottenham’s present as well as future.

Badiashile played 34 games for Monaco last season in all competitions. The center-back racked up 40 plus number in tackles, interceptions and a whopping 90 plus in aerial duels won and clearances. Moreover, Tottenham sent their scouts as well to watch Badiashile in action for Monaco as per various reports.

A swap deal for Badiashile with their outcast Davinson Sanchez would be a huge coup if Fabio Paratici pulls it off. However, Tottenham are not the first one to target Badiashile for a move. Newcastle United wanted a center-back as well back in January and tried to lure the Monaco defender.

Nonetheless, it is Tottenham who seems to be in the pole position to sign Badiashile. The France U-21 are had earned the label ‘The new Raphael Varane’ from AS back when Zinedine Zidane tried to sign him for Real Madrid. As evident, Tottenham are after the right man given his potential. Further on, under a coach like Conte, Badiashile could live up to the label AS awarded him.
