Real Madrid beat every competitor in the race to land AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. The Frenchman is currently one of the most promising talents across Europe, who Real have added to their team. The 22-year-old had a spectacular breakthrough season with Monaco last term which landed him on the radar of top European clubs. Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United,ed. Even PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe had asked Tchouameni to join him at the club as confirmed by the midfielder himself.

Tchouameni explains his refusal to Liverpool

Liverpool are in dire need of midfield reinforcements and hence targeted Tchouameni for a move. The Reds were ready to break the bank to meet Monaco’s asking price of £70 million. Moreover, Klopp too played a major role to try and convince Tchouameni. The German traveled to Monaco for a one-on-one conversation with Tchouameni, following it up with a phone call as well. But as it is evident, his efforts were not enough for Tchouameni to join the Premier League giants.

In his unveiling interview with Real, Tchouameni talked about why he turned down Liverpool and every other offer on the table. The midfielder started,

“As soon as Real Madrid arrived on the scene, I did not hesitate. I want to leave a mark on football and the best club for this is Real Madrid. It’s the best decision for me. When Madrid called, I didn’t hesitate and I talked about it with my family.”

Tchouameni further asserted that Real’s win over Liverpool in the Champions League final had nothing to do with his decision.

“In the Champions League final there were already negotiations between me and Real Madrid and it is true that when I watched the games against PSG and Man City, I wrote to my agent and told him: do everything possible to take me there, please,”

added Tchouameni.

The 2020-21 Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year also talked about his conversation with Mbappe over a potential move to PSG.

“Kylian decided to stay at PSG and he already knew that I was going to leave Monaco and wanted to know if I could go to PSG, but I told him I wanted Madrid and he understood perfectly,”

confirmed the midfielder.

Nonetheless, both Liverpool and PSG are moving on to other targets after missing out on Tchouameni. While Klopp has gotten his hands on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, PSG are looking to rebuild their team after securing Mbappe’s extension.
