Spain vs Germany controversy explained by UEFA officials

Football

On 5th July, Spain and Germany faced each other in the quarter finals of the UEFA Euro 2024. Spain came out as victorious as they defeated Germany 2-1 at the MHPArena in Stuttgart. Both teams were in their best form and were ready to face-off each other. Spain performed slightly better, leading to the elimination of the host nation, Germany. Spain, on the other hand, qualified and are getting ready to face Kylian Mbappe and France. The Spanish squad seem to be the favourites this year and Luis de la Fuente will try his best to manage this squad and help them reach glory.

But there was a big controversy in the match between Spain and Germany. Musiala unleashed a powerful shot that was clearly blocked by Marc Cucurella’s hand in the 105th minute of extra time. It was a blatant handball, and everyone, including the players and fans, vehemently protested the referee, Anthony Taylor’s decision to not call it.

UEFA’s explanation to Spain vs Germany controversy

The decision made by Anthony Taylor sparked a major controversy that is still being discussed on the internet. Fans and even some pundits heavily criticized him for his decision. However, UEFA recently published an explanation regarding the controversial decision in the match of Spain vs Germany.

Not every touch of arm, hand is a penalty. We want to consider the movement of the players. Biomechanical movements. You know, this is a clear situation. This is never a penalty.”, said Roberto Rosetti.

Rosetti is the UEFA head of referee. He provided this explanation in his pre-tournament briefing.

Germany’s manager Jules Naglesmann was not happy and satisfied with the decision at all. The German manager stated,

There is a rule and I hope there is no wrong decision. They applied the rule and it was not a penalty. I do not feel cheated. For me the question is about making it more practical, more logical, in terms of how this [handball] rule is assessed. I say this for football [in general] not today.”

In the end, Mikel Merino was the saviour for Spain as his goal was the decisive one. On the 118th minute he scored an excellent header from Dani Olmo’s cross and helped Spain qualify to the semi-finals of the competition.

This lead to a chaos after the match between the two teams. People inside the stadium could not believe their eyes. They could never agree with this decision and its explanation. As per reports, the fans want a rematch between the two teams and have started a petition. They do not agree with the decision and believe a rematch is the perfect solution.
