Sir Alex Ferguson became saviour for Charlie Nicholas

Charlie Nicholas recently appeared on a podcast where he talked about various incidents in his footballing career. Former Scotish international played for various clubs in his career and made his mark with all of them. Nicholas played as forward for Arsenal in 1983 to 1988. However this move nearly ended his international career. Nicholas talking about his Scotish career mentioned Sir Alex Ferguson as his saviour.

Nicholas moved to Arsenal from Celtic in 1983. The Scotish forward had an amazing season in 1982/83 where he scored 48 goals in 53 appearances. Along with Arsenal other big clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, etc were interested in signing him. Nicholas chose to join the gunners which made the scotish manager at that time unhappy.

Jock Stein was managing Scotish national team at that time. Stein wanted Nicholas to join Liverpool. Nicholas opened about Stein not picking him up because of his choice to join Arsenal on the Football’s greatest with Jeff Stelling podcast.

Jock Stein never visited North London to watch Nicholas play. While meeting with Nicholas, Stein told him that he picked a wrong club. Even when Nicholas was playing good, Stein dropped him from national team only because he played for Arsenal.

How Ferguson saved international career of Nicholas

Jock Stein suffered a massive heart attack and was announced dead in 1985. It was shortly after Scotland’s world cup qualifying game against Wales. Sir Alex Ferguson took the charge of the Scotland national team after the death of Stein.

Ferguson went on to watch Charlie Nicholas play and had a word with him. He told Nicholas that people in Scotland don’t watch him too much and that could be the reason of not considering him. Nicholas was soon called on International duty by Ferguson. Nicholas earned a spot in 1986 world cup and played two of the three group stage matches. Scotland unfortunately failed to qualify for the knockout rounds and exited the competition early. Nevertheless, Ferguson came in resuce to save the former Scotish striker’s career at a right time.
