About Football Express UK

Brazilian centre-back Thiago Silva has extended his contract for another year with the European Champions. The club came up with the announcement that the contract has been signed till the end of the 2022/23 season.

The 37-year old joined the Blues on one season deal from PSG in 2020. Soon after joining the Blues, he became the backbone of the team’s backline. He played a key role as the Chelsea side went on to become the Champions League winner.

The Blues defeated Manchester City in a thrilling final encounter by 1:0. Chelsea also came second behind league leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.

The 37-year-old Brazilian shared his words on Chelsea’s official website:

“To play here with Chelsea is a real pleasure. I never thought I would play for three years here in this great club so I’m very happy to stay for another season

It’s amazing to have this relationship with the fans and not only that but the players, staff and the whole club. I’m going to give everything to keep playing at this level in the most important league in the world.”

The veteran was due to become a free agent this summer and with the contract extension, the former Paris Saint-Germain defender will be staying on for a little while longer. He has started in 14 Premier League games for Chelsea so far this term.

Chelsea’s reaction on Silva’s contract extension

Chelsea’s director Marina Granovskaia heaped praise on Silva for his performance and qualities after the contract extension:

“Thiago Silva’s experience, leadership and performances have been and remain very important to this squad, so we are hugely pleased to extend his contract by another year.

“We look forward to his continued influence as we seek honours this season and next, and more of the qualities that have led to him having such a big impact for us on and off the pitch.”

The centre back has played 56 games for Chelsea since arriving in the summer of 2020. He went on to score four goals and assisted two goals in all competitions.

The contract extension became a priority as the other centre-backs Rudiger and Christensen are also running out of contract at the end of the season.
