Rooney to be interviewed for Everton manager role

Everton

Everton is set to interview Wayne Rooney for the role of manager. The club is in the market in search of a new manager after sacking Rafa Benitez last week.

Wayne Rooney is considered to be one of the main choices in the role of the manager by Everton. According to the Telegraph, the Toffees are set to interview the former Manchester United star for the position.

Everton is sitting 16th in the Premier League table with just 19 points from their 19 matches. They have appointed club legend Duncan Ferguson as the caretaker manager for the time being.

EVERTON SACK MANAGER BENITEZ

While Everton did have a good start under manager new manager Rafa Benitez, the results soon started to go the other way round. The club only won 1 of their last 13 league games, a form which ultimately lead them to axe the manager.

It was always going to be hard for Rafa Benitez to win over the Everton fans. The Spaniard was a former manager at Liverpool, famously winning the 2005 Champions League trophy with the Reds. This was something the Everton fans could not fully overlook.

With results also not going in the manager’s favour, it was not long before the fans started showing their emotions. Everton was forced to sack Benitez, only half a season after bringing him in. Duncan Ferguson will take over as the caretaker manager for the time being as the Toffees have started their search for an ideal candidate.

ROONEY IMPRESSING UNDER DIFFICULTY

There have been multiple names thrown around, with the likes of Graham Potter, Sean Dyche and Frank Lampard being some of them. But it looks like Wayne Rooney is the favourite to take over the helm as Everton manager.

Rooney made his name with Everton as a forward before making his move to Manchester United. He is a boyhood Everton fan and knows about the club as well. However, it is not just the reason why Everton are looking at him as their ideal target.

The 36-year-old is currently the manager of Derby County in the Championship. The Rams are having strict transfer restrictions and a huge 21-point deduction after entering administration. Despite all that Rooney has managed to do an impressive job, with Derby just 8 points away from safety.

This shows the managerial abilities of Rooney, especially under unfavourable circumstances. It will be a vital quality in anyone that is coming to Goodison Park, as the Toffees have many problems to address.

If the interview goes well, we could see Rooney be back in the Premier League for the first time as a manager. It will be an excellent opportunity for Rooney to showcase his ability as manager Everton but would be disastrous for Derby County.
