Donny van de Beek is reportedly considering a permanent move out of Manchester United this summer. Moreover, the midfielder wants a transfer to the Italian side AS Roma according to reports. Van de Beek found it difficult to break into the United starting line-up, forcing him to consider an exit. However, Roma have emerged as a surprise destination for Van de Beek who hopes of finding regular game-time there. United could also facilitate his exit since the club is looking for new options in the midfield.
Erik ten Hag’s appointment as the United manager brought a sense of hope for Van de Beek to revive his United career. Ten Hag has formerly coached Van de Beek at Ajax, under whom the midfielder thrived for the Dutch side. Van de Beek was thought to be the first benefiter of Ten Hag’s arrival at United. However, as things turn out Ten Hag is ready to part ways with his former player in order to sign new reinforcements. The 25-year-old Holland international signed for the Red Devils in 2020 for £35 million from Ajax. But Van de Beek could be on his out after just two years at the club with Roma his preferred club.
Van de Beek wants to play for Roma next season
According to Corriere della Sera, Van de Beek has shown interest in joining Roma ahead of the next season. The midfielder feels United are not ready to trust him and hence won’t get regular game-time. Moreover, the Premier League club is already negotiating transfers for new midfielders in Frenkie de Jong and Ruben Neves. Both the players operate in the same position as Van de Beek which would further reduce his game-time.
Van de Beek endured a torrid first season at United, making 36 appearances for the club out of which just 7 were full 90 minutes. The situation didn’t change last season as well with United then sending Van de Beek on loan to Everton in the January transfer market. However, the midfielder found no redemption with the Toffees, featuring only 7 times for the club.
Van de Beek has grown frustrated and has demanded a permanent transfer away from United. The Dutchman now wants to experience playing in Italy. Jose Mourinho’s Roma has attracted the attention of Van de Beek and a move is on the player’s mind. However, it would be a complicated deal given the transfer fee that United would demand and the midfielder’s lucrative wages.
United will certainly look to recoup the £35 million they spent on Van de Beek. On the other hand, it would be hard to say whether Roma splash an amount in that range to acquire the midfielder. Further on the Conference League winners will also have to ensure that Van de Beek fits the Mourinho system. Nonetheless, Van de Beek could join another United player Nemanja Matic in playing for Roma next season. Matic is also inching closer toward a free transfer to Roma after announcing his exit from United.
