New Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick talked about his feelings on the future of Paul Pogba with the club. The French midfielder will see his contract with the Red Devils end in the summer of 2022.
The German was speaking to the press before the game against Norwich. Rangnick was asked about the current contract situation of Pogba, who is missing from action due to injury.
Manchester United has been in negotiation with Pogba regarding renewing his contract, with the French international garnering interest from the likes of PSG, Real Madrid and Juventus. Rangnick made it clear that he will not try to convince Pogba to stay in Manchester if he doesn’t want to.
RANGNICK ON POGBA SITUATION
“I wouldn’t say he is not worth keeping but players need to want to stay and play for the club. If a player doesn’t want to play for a club like Manchester United, even in the long term, I don’t think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind,” – said Rangnick about Pogba.
Pogba is currently undergoing his recovery in Dubai after picking up an injury during his international duties with France. This meant that new boss Rangnick has not been able to use the World Cup winner in his team.
“I have to get to know him. I have to speak to him. It is about being fully physically fit. The way we want to play is high intensity. It will take some time for him to get fully fit. Once he is fully fit, I see him as a midfielder rather than a striker or a left-winger.”
HEADING FOR THE EXIT?
The 28-year-old has been a subject of division for many Manchester United supporters. While there is no denying the incredible talent and quality Pogba has, his time in England has been mixed. This also includes the tough period he had to go through when the team was managed by Jose Mourinho.
Pogba had an excellent start to the new season as well, assisting 4 times in the opening Premier League match against Leeds United. He followed that up with 3 more assists to take his assist tally to 7 in the league from 9 appearances. But the last match he played for United was during their humiliating defeat to Liverpool, where he picked up a red card.
His latest injury means that the French midfielder will be out till the beginning of the new year. With his contract ending this season, this will also be the time when he can start to talk with other clubs for a move.
There seem to be no changes in the contract negotiations between the club and the player. Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has been flaming the fire through his comments and says that offers are on the table already from other clubs. Real Madrid looks like the next possible destination, but PSG and Juventus are also in the race.
The latest comments from Ralf Rangnick could be an indication of what the club wants with the player. However, it will be hard for United to sell Pogba in the winter window and it looks like they will have to let go of him for free in summer.
