About Football Express UK

The Premier League 2020-21 season ended as Manchester City crowned as the new champions and let’s have a look at the top five midfielders who prevailed in this season. The defending champions Liverpool, however, could only manage a third position in the league standings.

Thomas Tuchel was successful in guiding Chelsea to the top four after being appointed after the sacking of former boss Frank Lampard. Whereas Leicester City dropped out of the top 4 and Manchester United were impressive in the away games after finishing at second spot at the end.

5. Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan has been a key player for Manchester City this season in their consistent run of form. He has scored 13 goals this time around finishing ninth among the top scorers. In addition to that, the German international is the second best midfielder in terms of scoring goals this season.

His goal scoring rate is pretty good as he scores one goal every 156 minutes. The 30-year-old central midfielder has a pretty good impressive passing percentage of 91% and thus, he ensured that the ball was always kept rolling.

4. Yves Bissouma – one of the promising talents in the Premier League

Yves Bissouma had a wonderful season with lower-ranked club Brighton and is the youngest talent among this top five list. In his 36 appearances for the club this season, he finished second in terms of most tackles ever in this season, with 104 tackles to his name.

The 24-year-old Mali international is the best among all the midfielders included in that list and thus, he has attracted attention from other big names in the league. He is also sixth among the most clearances made by a player with 64 clearances.

3. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – an impressive Premier League debut

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has had a wonderful debut season for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. In addition to this, he made the most appearances ever by a player this season (3420 minutes). Also, the Danish midfielder is third in terms of most passes with 2448 passes to his name.

The 25-year-old midfielder has the ability to provide some mouthwatering long balls and has been involved in 298 ball recoveries. As a result, he deserves to be the third best performer of the season.

2. Kevin de Bruyne

Another key player for the Cityzens would be Kevin de Bruyne. His impressive passing ability and ability to create some goalscoring opportunities have finally helped his team once again win the Premier League.

The 29-year-old Belgian had assisted twelve times this season and is third among the top goal providers. He had been a pretty decent player picking up just a single booking in his 25 appearances. However, he was unlucky in the Champions League as Chelsea won 1-0 against them in the final.

1. Bruno Fernandes – best among the rest

Bruno Fernandes was the most impressive player this campaign for the midfield section. He finished third in terms of top goalscorers in the league with 18 goals and second among the top assist providers with 12 assists. Surprisingly, the 26-year-old Portuguese international made 37 appearances for the Red Devils in an surprising second place finish.

He turned out to be the best midfielder among the top goalscorers and goal providers in the English league. However, he was unable to win a Europa League after getting defeated by Villarreal by penalties. Fernandes had a night to forget after a disappointing performance in the Europe’s second tier competition.
