Premier League clubs eye John Swift

John Swift

Reading are confident that they are going to keep their talisman this January despite interest from Premier League clubs. Both Brentford and Leeds United have shown interest to bag the services of John Swift. His contract expires on June 30, 2022.

John Swift has been exceptional for Reading so far this season as ‘the Royals’ are fighting to avoid a relegation scrap. Hence, Swift has garnered much attention. However, neither Brentford nor Leeds would be able to acquire John Swift’s services in this transfer window, owing to his handsome contract with Reading.

Player Profile

After coming through the ranks at Stamford Bridge, John Swift was loaned first to Rotherham, Swindon, and then to Brentford. Before making a permanent move to Reading, scoring on his debut. He has also gone on to secure a contract extension.

John Swift’s Impressive Season so far

John Swift season

The 26-years-old English midfielder has given hope to Reading fans. John Swift has scored eight goals and assisted nine times in 21 matches this season across all competitions.

Swift has also been tidy in midfield with an average of 50 passes per match with a pass completion rate of 84%. He has also been named Man of the Match three times. Along with an average rating of 7.37, the numbers illustrate a stellar season so far.

Swift has often been deployed as a central attacking midfielder with an eye for scoring goals. The lanky midfielder’s strengths lie in his passing range, dribbling and his ability to unlock defences with key passes. He is also the set-piece specialist for ‘the Royals’.

Owing to his incredible performances, Swift has lit up an otherwise dismal season for Reading. His most dominant performance was against QPR. Where he scored a hattrick in a 6-goal thriller at home.

The English midfielder has caught the eye of top-flight clubs, as a transfer looks imminent. He is valued at £5.40 million. This valuation has deterred Leeds and Brentford from securing his services as a transfer can be arranged for free in the coming summer transfer window.

Both Leeds and Brentford would like John Swift in their squads. As both of these teams have been frail in the midfield due to a combination of injuries and underwhelming performances. Leeds United particularly need to bolster their defence as they are dangerously close to the relegation spots. With Kalvin Phillips’ future at Leeds also looking murky, Leeds would do well to do this shrewd piece of business.
