Newcastle United 0 – 4 Manchester City: Post Match Analysis

Manchester City holds on to their lead in the Premier League as they beat Newcastle United on the weekend. The current champions defeated the Magpies away from home with a resounding scoreline of 4-0.

The victory ends an exciting week for Manchester City as they registered another impressive win. Newcastle United on the other hand is on a three-match losing streak and stay in the relegation zone.

Goals from Ruben Diaz, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling helped Manchester City to stay at the top with a 3 point lead over second-placed Liverpool. Newcastle remains 19th in the table, level on points with last-placed Norwich City.

Newcastle made many changes to the side that lost against Liverpool. Upfront, Callum Wilson returned to the team, replacing Allan Saint-Maximin upfront. Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock also made it into starting eleven, replacing Jonjo Shelvey in the midfield.

Jacob Murphy was moved to the midfield, while Jamal Lewis, Fabian Schar and Javier Manquillo all dropped to the bench. The other players who returned to the starting eleven are Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark.

The Premier League champions also made multiple changes. Joao Cancelo returned to the team after his one-match suspension, replacing John Stones in the right-back. Upfront, both Phil Foden and Jack Grealish also were not started. Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling took their place.

Manchester City made a quick start when an error from Ciaran Clark gifted them their first goal. Ruben Dias was at the end of a lofted ball from Cancelo.

Cancelo soon became the scorer when his wonderful effort from outside the box beat goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. There was controversy at the other end when Manchester City keeper Ederson seem to have fouled Ryan Fraser. However, the referee and the VAR did not seem worthy of a penalty.

The third goal came from Mahrez in the 63rd minute. A beautiful cross from Oleksandr Zincenko was placed into the net by the Algerian. While the referee called it for an offside, the check from VAR overturned the decision in favour of the visitors.

The best chance for Newcastle came in the 80th minute when a powerful header from Callum Wilson was saved swiftly by Ederson. Manchester city soon added the 4th goal of the match when the cross from Jesus was met by Sterling.

Victory for Manchester City meant that they will remain at top of the league going into Christmas. The lead at the top is now 3 points, as Liverpool could only draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Citizens will face Leicester City next in the league on boxing day.

For Newcastle United, it is going to be a very hard holiday season, with just 10 points from their 18 matches. However, the fixtures do improve for the Magpies. Though they will face Manchester United next, they will then have matches with Everton, Southampton and Watford in the league.
