Manchester United’s possible opponents in the Champions League round of 16 stage

About Football Express UK

Despite only managing to come away with one point in the final group game against Young Boys, Manchester United have finished group toppers in the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils’ only defeat in the group stage game against Young Boys in the opening fixture. And this means the Old Trafford outfit failed to beat the bottom team of this group on both occasions.

Manchester United finished Group F as the leader after accumulating 11 points in six games. Villarreal is the other team from this group who qualified for the knock-out stage. Following their victory against Atalanta in the final game. And the Italian side have now been relegated to the Europa League.

The potential opponent of Manchester United in Champions League round of 16:

The finishers of group toppers will face any of the teams who finished second in their subsequent groups. But they can not be drawn teams from the same league competition in this round of knock-out stage.

Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Ajax Amsterdam, LOSC Lille, Juventus and Real Madrid finished as the group leaders in their groups.

On the other hand, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Villarreal, Sporting CP, Red Bulls Salzburg, Chelsea and Inter Milan have finished in the second spot. The biggest shocks are Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund failing to qualify for the knock-out stage and being relegated to the Europa League.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils can not be drawn against Chelsea as they are both associated with the Premier League. And also can not play against Villarreal as they were part of the same group. Apart from that, six possible teams could be drawn as the Red Devils’ opponent.

Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Sporting CP, Red Bulls Salzburg and Inter Milan among these names one will be the potential opponent of Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16.

Benfica, Salzburg or Sporting CP could be an easier opponent than the others. But, in the knock-out stage of the Champions League, every team will be strong enough to beat one and another.

The draw will take place on Monday and the games will take place in February. As the group leader, Manchester United will have the advantage to play the second leg at home. And it will be interesting to see what the situation will be at that time regarding the Covid-19. If the games will have to be played in an empty stadium. Then there will be no home advantage for either side.
