Manchester United are set for the transfer of Mason Greenwood to the French club Olympique de Marseille for a price of £26.6million.
Greenwood, 22, was a product of United’s academy. But has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 and was on loan at Getafe last season.
Nine months later, authorities charged him with attempted rape, assault occasioning bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. However, they dropped the charges and the case in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew.
Greenwood has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
What lies ahead for the 22-year-old?
As the Englishman joins the French side, some supporters and fans doesn’t seem to be happy. While some withstand with the transfer as they usher in with protests with #GreenwoodNotWelcome and #GreenwoodWelcome trending on X.
Speaking of his recent performance, Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 appearances for Getafe C.F. during his loan period at the Spanish club. During his time at Old Trafford, he scored 35 times in 129 appearances.
The former Red Devils player who was winding up his home from thereafter a cynical and stretched out exit, it was definitely about to spark controversy. Greenwood could play his first game in England in more than two years this summer as part of Marseille’s pre-season schedule. On August 3, Marseille will travel to Valley Parade in his hometown of Bradford to face Sunderland in their penultimate game.
Marseille Boss, Roberto de Zerbi, said “Mason is a world-class player, but we have not recruited him yet. I don’t know what happened, but I am not used to get involved in my players’ private life,”
Furthermore added, “But if he comes here, you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons. I can tell them off in private, but I would never attack them in public.”
It appears that the club manager and players are their to support and upbring the talents and services of Greenwood and help him overcome this ramping riot.
