Manchester United are keen to add the services of veteran midfielder Tom Huddlestone to the squad this summer in the transfer window.
Having played over 500 matches in his career, Tom Huddlestone could now be close to joining the Red Devils. The player will take up the player-manager role in the U21 side of the United squad for the new season.
As things stand, the 35-year-old veteran midfielder is a free agent as his contract expired with Hull City. United are pushing for his signature and are one step away to land him at the club this summer.
Manchester United to sign Tom Huddlestone
Huddlestone can take up a variety of roles on the pitch by playing as a centre-back or central midfielder. However, he enjoys playing more as a defensive midfielder for the club as he is more efficient in that role.
At 35, he will be allowed to take up the managerial role and the player role for the U21 side. It is so because the Premier League 2 allows clubs to have five over-aged players and one goalkeeper.
Therefore, United will have no issues facilitating a move for the veteran midfielder in the U21 squad this summer. Huddlestone too is keen to take up the hybrid role and work with the youth squad in the forthcoming season.
Paul McShane was the previous player who took up the hybrid role with the youth squad before retiring this summer. Huddlestone is expected to groom the U21 and help them attain a competitive level to eventually breakthrough the ranks.
The Red Devils will make an official announcement regarding the player soon and the hybrid role in place for him. Moreover, the youth squad could do a lot with the amount of experience that the veteran holds throughout his career.
