Manchester United interested in Leeds United goalkeeper Meslier

About Football Express UK

Manchester United are reportedly interested in Leeds United goalkeeper Meslier. The Red Devils have Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson as backup options for David De Gea. However, the club intends to get a young goalkeeper because the longevity of the trio is unreliable.

Dean Henderson has expressed his wish to leave the club whereas Tom Heaton is 34 years old and David De Gea is 32 years old.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United had sent their goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton to watch Meslier on Tuesday night.

Unfortunately for Meslier, that night was unforgettable as Manchester City thrashed Leeds 7-0.

Looking from a financial perspective, Meslier had already signed a 5-year contract with Leeds in August 2021. Manchester United will participate in the transfer window and possibly can pay a good amount of money to Leeds.

Do Manchester United actually need Meslier?

De Gea has had a disappointing campaign with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The ex-Manchester United manager, at the start of the year, started Dean Henderson for 9 consecutive games. Fortunately for De Gea, he made a comeback when Dean tested positive for Covid.

In August, David made memorable saves against Southampton and Wolves. Against West Ham, he even saved a penalty in injury time.

Both David and Ronaldo have carried Manchester United despite their poor performances. David even displayed exemplary performances in the Champions League. Unfortunately Manchester United still concede goals because of their sloppy defence but if it weren’t for De Gea then they would have lost almost every match.

In terms of PSXG (Post Shot Expected Goals), he leads the ranking. This metric is used to analyse goalkeepers because it monitors how a keeper saves a shot based on where it will end up.

Meslier on the other hand is a young goalkeeper and will not get playing time at Manchester United. Even if Meslier does start for The Red Devils, he will not be able to provide instant impact. David also has a lot of experience playing in big competitions against big teams as well. All signs show that Meslier can only be a backup keeper for Manchester United.
