Manchester United do not expect Cavani departure in January

About Football Express UK

Edinson Cavani will not be pushing for a move away from Manchester United in January. This is despite the rumours that the player is looking for a transfer in the winter window.

However, the latest reports from Manchester Evening News is reassuring for Manchester United. As per the report, Cavani will not push for his departure in January.

Cavani is having limited playing time in Manchester United this season. His contract ends in the summer of 2022, meaning he could start pre-agreement with other clubs. Hence the Red Devils might not be worried if he decides to leave in January.

CAVANI AT MANCHESTER UNITED

The 34-year-old made his move to Manchester United last season on a free transfer from PSG. He had a decent first season with the Red Devils coming close to winning the Europa League with them.

In his 40 appearances for United in the 2020/21 season, Edinson Cavani scored a respectable 17 goals and 10 assists. This includes his 4 goals against AS Roma in the Europa League semi-finals across both legs. (all stats are taken from Transfermarkt)

However, things have been very hard this season. The Uruguayan has only made 8 appearances totalling just under 300 minutes in total. Injuries have been a crucial factor in limiting his playing time, while the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has also made it difficult for him.

LOOKING FOR A MOVE

With minutes drying up, there was always the rumours about Cavani wanting to leave Manchester United. His agent also mentions the possibility of a departure in 2022, with multiple clubs showing interest in the 34-year-old.

Barcelona is considered to be a frontrunner for his signature, especially after the untimely retirement of Sergio Aguero. The Catalans are in desperate need of attacking talents and consider Cavani to be a good option. While the arrival of Xavi Hernandez, could shift the focus of the team to young talents, the Uruguayan remains the main target.

Juventus are in the mix as well as they desperately try to solve their problems in Serie A. There is also interest coming from South America and an earlier report did suggest that Cavani wants to move closer to home.

However, the latest report did suggest that Cavani might be looking to stay with United till the end of the season. With his contract coming to an end in the summer, he can start negotiating with another club from January. This will give him and his agent time to assess all the options in front of them and make a better decision.
