Manchester United: Defense in Shambles or Trouble in the wings?

Manchester United have had a terrible season in the Premier League as they end the season in 6th position. Moreover they accumulated 58 points, Their worst ever since Alex Ferguson left the club. However the real talking point was the goal difference as they finished with zero in the end. This either means United have not been creating a lot of chances and hence not a lot of goals. Or it means the defense was not up to the mark this season. The answer was “YES” as United were poor defensively and offensively.

United have had a poor defensive display as the players were unable to keep the team from conceding. The United employed a counter-attacking playstyle however switched to a possession bases style as they signed Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. The players could not adapt to the new style and had a poor run of form. Moreover, the defense was constantly injured throughout the season and United were unable to choose a first choice centre back pairing.

The English club have had trouble finding the back of the net this season except for a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. United troubles mostly came from the wings as they were unable to supply to Ronaldo. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho went through horrid games throughout the season. While Jadon Sancho had a better second half as he adjusts to the Premier League. Rashford could not find his footing in the season.

The Underlying issue in the Man United camp

However, the biggest issue with the United squad was the lack of passion. It was clearly visible as the players gave up trying at the end of the season. Barring a couple of exceptions, The Man Utd squad looked dull and motionless. In some games, Players stopped pressing for the ball in the very final minutes of the game.

The Red Devils need to sort out their issues before the new season. However their underlying issue is a mental one and one that has been with them since 2013.
