Manchester United suffered a 1-0 loss in their final game of the season. United Goalkeeper David De Gea gave his final thoughts on the season. Moreover, he spoke about the players who are unhappy at United.
“I want to forget this season and be 100% ready for the next season and be positive. It has been horrible, a very bad season in all ways, it has been very tough. It is time to rest and prepare your minds for next season.
Ones who want to stay, stay at the club. Ones that don’t want to stay go out. You don’t have to stay here.”
A Shaky past and Redemption
De Gea has been one of the most important players in the club post-Alex Ferguson. The Spaniard has had a shaky defense in front of him every single season. However, De Gea has put up incredible numbers for United during this period.
De Gea had a poor couple of seasons before the current one as his place in the side was being threatened. He was making simple mistakes that could have been easily avoided. Hence, he was replaced by Dean Henderson. Henderson was becoming United’s first-choice keeper until De Gea redeemed himself.
The penalty shootout in the Europa League final loss against Villareal broke De Gea. In fact, he started to work on himself and in training. This shows us the man is one of the most important players in United’s campaign along with Cristiano Ronaldo. Without the duo, United could have finished mid-table or even be fighting a relegation battle.
Erik Ten Hag is the new manager and he likes a commanding goalkeeper. Moreover, his goalkeepers start from the back and have decent distribution. De Gea lacks in both departments however he is a vital part of the United team. Ten Hag will recognize this and would be giving De Gea an opportunity to prove himself.
