Manchester City have reportedly shifted their attention to Antoine Griezmann as a cheaper alternative to Harry Kane, as per the report in Fichajes.
The 30-year-old has been struggling with his form since making the move from Atlético de Madrid to Barcelona for €120 million. The Frenchman has made 99 appearances for the Blaugrana over the past couple of campaigns and scored 35 goals.
Previously reported that Manchester City had made a bid of £100 million plus players for Harry Kane. But, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has turned down the offer and is willing to keep the England captain at north London, despite the forward’s desire to leave the club this summer.
After a huge offer rejected by Spurs, the Citizens are exploring the market and looking for an alternative to Kane. Pep Guardiola has identified Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann as one of the targets for the centre forward position.
Will Manchester City go for Griezmann if they fail to secure Kane deal?
According to the report in Fichajes, Manchester City are looking to spend big this summer. They have targeted Harry Kane and Jack Grealish as the priority signings. But, given their huge price tag, City might go for plan C which will be Antoine Griezmann.
The report further claims that Pep Guardiola is an admirer of the Frenchman and with the world cup winner in the squad, the City boss can use his preferred 4-3-3 false nine formation next season. Griezmann will be a perfect addition to that system at Manchester.
However, previously reported that Griezmann has no intention of leaving the Catalan giants yet. But, the Barcelona board are looking to offload players to reduce the wage bills and they are open in selling their star who earns huge money but his performance has not been the best.
It will be interesting to see if Manchester City will go for Griezmann as a cheaper alternative to Kane. The Frenchman has struggled with form in recent seasons. But there is no doubt about the quality of the player. And his work rate off the ball is one of the attributes that can help Guardiola during the high press.
