Manchester City to add Stefan Ortega to their long list of transfers

About Football Express UK

Manchester City’s recruitment team has now identified goalkeeper Stefan Ortega as their next target. City have already concluded two deals, and are now on the verge of signing Ortega. Furthermore, City have many more deals lined up including Ortega’s. Their CEO Khaldoon Al Mubarak had last month pointed out that there will be more signings and the same is taking place.

City could lose their current deputy to Zack Steffen since the American desires regular minutes with the World Cup fast approaching. City quickly set sights on Ortega as a loan deal is in discussion for Steffen. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano now reveals that the Premier League champions are close to announcing Ortega as their latest signing.

Meanwhile, City are also negotiating deals for Leeds’ Kalvin Philipps and Brighton’s Marc Cucurella. The duo are wanted as the replacements of Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy. On the other hand, City will first complete the signing of Ortega from Bundesliga side Armenia Bielefeld to then proceed with Philipps and Cucurella.

Ortega to City almost done: Fabrizio Romano

Fabrizio Romano through his Twitter handle has reported that City have closed the signing of Ortega. The 29-year-old became a free agent this summer after his contract expired with Armenia. City pounced on the opportunity to save themselves from spending funds on a new backup ‘keeper.

Romano said,

“Stefan Ortega, new Manchester City goalkeeper to be announced soon. Contract until June 2025 for the new second GK, with Zack Steffen set to leave. Middlesbrough are closing on Steffen loan deal with Man City”. Though Ortega seems a name unknown, the shot-stopper certainly ticks all the boxes of ‘Guardiola’s goalkeeper”.

Stefan has 220 first-team appearances under his belt at Armenia, across the Bundesliga as well as the Bundesliga 2. Stefan has managed 67 clean sheets in those 220 games. Though it looks as if Ortega is not the one for City, he has still got the mettle to prove. Ortega posted a massive save percentage of 73.3% having faced 172 shots on target.

And though he let in too many goals (59), Ortega did outshine his City counterpart Ederson‘s save percentage of 69.9%. Furthermore, Ortega also outclasses the Brazilian in passes and long-balls completed per game. While Ederson posted 25.9 passes and 4 long-balls in the league last season, Ortega racked up 50.7 passes completed and 15 long-balls. As evident, his distribution is another aspect that would delight Guardiola.

With Ortega added to the team, City will now focus on completing Philipps’ signing and take ahead the negotiations for Cucurella. Certainly, Manchester City are once again beefing up to retain their Premier League crown and clinch a maiden Champions League trophy.
