Manchester City monitoring Joao Felix situation at Atletico Madrid

About Football Express UK

Manchester City are amongst many clubs interested in signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid. The youngster is keen on leaving Atleti after failing to prove his hype with the Spanish outfit.

Many clubs are interested in signing him with FC Barcelona asking for him last season as well. The negotiations began on deadline day but at that point, Joao wanted to stay with Atletico.

However, Atletico Madrid are demanding at least £100 million for him, just like they had spent 3 years ago.

According to Fichajes , Manchester City and reportedly Pep Guardiola are considering signing Felix as well.

Atletico Madrid signed him from Benfica back in 2019 for a staggering fee of £130 million. Unfortunately, he has struggled with them and has managed to score only 22 goals in 90 appearances.

Even in the current season he only has 1 goal in 12 appearances over all competitions. This has pushed him down Diego Simeone’s pecking order as well.

Will Manchester City break the bank for Joao Felix?

Manchester City have played without a traditional number 9 for the past 2 seasons now. Earlier the Cityzens had the likes of Aguero as their much needed clinical striker. But he moved to FC Barcelona last season.

Joao Felix is not a traditional number 9, he is not a poacher but is a very creative player. His preferred position is an attacking midfielder. He can easily resist press and is tough to dispossess. Felix has very talented dribbling abilities as well but his best trait is scanning out spaces and utilising it.

Manchester City are not a club to shy away from spending big money but they can possibly get Erling Haaland for £100 million instead of Joao. Haaland is way better than Felix and it seems that if the price tag is not reduced then City will not break the bank. From the player’s perspective, Manchester City will be the best option for him to redeem his career. If the Cityzens fail to sign Erling, then they can go for Joao Felix as well.

Is Joao Felix’s failure at Atletico Madrid completely his fault?

At just the age of 19, Joao switched to one of the world’s toughest leagues. It would take even a talented player like Felix some time to settle. Unfortunately, that was not his biggest challenge. The biggest challenge was Diego Simeone’s defensive system.

Diego Simeone is known for employing strict defensive tactics, he requires the entire team to contribute more to defence. His main role is the link-up play with the striker upfront. Unfortunately at Atletico Madrid, under Diego he has never had a free role.
