Barcelona is reportedly closing in on a deal for Manchester City forward Ferran Torres as per the report in English outlet BBC Sports.
The 21-year-old joined the Citizens during the summer of 2020 from La Liga side Valencia for around £20.5 million. The forward started this season brilliantly, scoring two goals and assisting one time in the first four Premier League appearances. But, since then, he hasn’t been able to play any minutes due to injury issues.
According to the report, Barcelona has reached an agreement with Manchester City for Ferran Torres. The Catalan giants will pay an initial €55 million(£46.7m) plus €10 million(£8.5m) in bonuses to the reigning Premier League champions.
The report further claims that the Blaugrana have funded this deal through a bank loan during the club’s financial difficulties. Meanwhile, despite signing the highly-rated youngster, the Spanish giants will not be able to register the player due to the financial fair play rule in Spanish football.
Barcelona will need to offload a few players in the January transfer window and free up the space for the youngster’s inclusion. Otherwise, it would become a complicated situation for the Blaugrana.
Is Ferran Torres a good fit for Barcelona?
Signing Ferran Torres will be a very good acquisition for Barcelona. The youngster can be deployed on the wide areas as well as the centre-forward position. Therefore, the 21-year-old’s versatility will be a great asset for the Blaugrana boss Xavi Hernandez.
La Liga giants were searching for a new striker in this January transfer window. And securing a deal before the start of the window is a great business from the Spanish giants. However, given Xavi was eyeing for a centre-forward, spending that much money on a player who has played in the wide areas during most of the time in his career is not quite understandable.
But, with Ousmane Dembele’s future hanging in the air, the 21-year-old will be a very good replacement for the Frenchman if he decides to leave the club for free at the end of this season.
So, it will be interesting to see if the Blaugrana will be able to register the new signing or not. During the summer transfer window, Barcelona failed to offload its expensive flops. And Gerard Pique had to take a pay cut to make room for the new signing. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if a similar situation will arrive or not at the end of the January transfer window.
