Lucas Torreira is a 25-year-old Uruguayan national team player. His preferred position is in the number 6 or part of a pivot with two defensive midfielders. The player had joined Sampdoria in 2015 and was sent back on loan to Pescara on a loan. During the 17/18 season for Sampdoria, he had scored 4 and assisted 1 goal. While averaging 2 interceptions and 2.8 tackles per 90. That season he was in the top 15 players for the highest number of tackles and interceptions while being at the age of 21. Following that season Lucas Torreira played in the 2018 world cup with Uruguay. During that time many eyes were on the player due to his age and similarity to N’Golo Kante. Following the World cup, Arsenal had signed Lucas Torreira for a fee of £25.79m.

What went wrong between Arsenal and Lucas Torreira?

During his first season at Arsenal, Lucas Torreira scored 2 and assisted 2 goals in the league. He also made 1.2 interceptions and 1.9 tackles per 90. In the eyes of many, He was said to be the steal of the season but the next season changed it all. Unai Emery started playing him as a box-to-box midfielder which caused a lot of issues within the system. The next season he only started 17 games and just helped in two-goal contributions. Before the 20/21 season, it was reported that the player and manager had a dispute. This led to the player being loaned to Atletico Madrid.

During that season he just started 3 games in the season and was subbed on 14 times. It wasn’t the best of seasons for the player and well his family situation didn’t help him either. During that year Lucas Torreira lost his mother. Due to this, it has been reported the player lost his passion for football. The player wanted to leave and go back to Uruguay to be with his family. The silver lining for that season was the fact that Atletico Madrid won the season.

With Arsenal realising how sensitive the situation is concerning the player who was one of the rising stars a few years ago. A loan move for Lucas back to Italy could be the key to getting his passion back. In a league, he is comfortable in a club that is willing to play him. This season shall be one that could make or break the complicated relationship between Arsenal and Lucas Torreira.
