Liverpool vs Aston Villa: Match Preview

After dominating the group stages in the Champions League, Liverpool returns to Premier League action against Aston Villa. The Reds will host the Villains in what will be an emotional return for their legend Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool won their final group stage match in the UCL by defeating AC Milna 2-1 away from home. As a result, they became the first-ever English side to win all 6 of the group stage matches in the Champions League in that process. Now Liverpool will shift their focus to Aston Villa, who are coming back of a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

The night however will be remembered for the return of club legend Steven Gerrard. He took over as the manager of Aston Villa last month and will face Liverpool in front of Anfield. Gerrard has done an excellent job since taking over, securing 9 out of possible 12 points up for grabs.

The home side seems to be back on track at the injury front. Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones are out and there are no new updates on a return date. However, Roberton Firmino is being assessed and could even make it into the bench.

Liverpool did provide rest to many of their stars in the Champions League victory over AC Milan. Most importantly both Naby Keita and Joe Gomez made their return to the field after their injuries. Any updates on the team will only be available after manager Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference.

For Aston Villa, Leon Bailey, Trezeguet, and Bertrand Traore will not be making it into the squad due to their respective injuries. Right-back Matt Targett will be assessed after missing the last game due to a head injury. Danny Ings could also make his return, but more clarity will be available only after the press conference.

LIVERPOOL: Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Sadio Mane

ASTON VILLA: Emiliano Martinez; Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Matt Targett; John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz; Jacob Ramsey, Emiliano Buendia; Ollie Watkins

PREDICTIONS: Liverpool 2 – 1 Aston Villa

Under Steven Gerrard, Villa has made improvements and more importantly got the results. However, Liverpool could be too much to handle. The Reds are scoring for fun and are the top scorers of the league with 44 goals. The front three of Salah, Mane, and Jota are in red hot form and can destroy any defense.

Thus is it very hard to argue a case against Liverpool. Aston Villa does have a recent history of pulling out the surprises. It was only last season when the Villains humiliated Liverpool 7-2 at home. But with Villa traveling to Anfield, we believe it’s going to be a victory for the host.

The build-up of this game is revolving around the return of Steven Gerrard. He is a true legend of the club and all the fans will be excited to welcome him back. The 41-year old is expected to one day take over the managerial job of Liverpool. However for now he will have to forget his roots and concentrate on the job at hand.
