Liverpool: Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool needs a new blood

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool just lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid. They lost the match by a goal thanks to Vinicius Jr scoring in the 59th minute for Madrid.

Liverpool were the dominant side as they had 24 shots against Madrid however they were unable to score even once. This was mostly because of a couple of reasons. One, Ancelotti had anticipated Liverpool to attack relentlessly and had a defensive approach to the game which worked in his favor. Secondly, Thibaut Courtois, singlehandedly carried Madrid as he played one of them, If not the best goalkeeping performance in a Champions League final.

Liverpool were unable to take their chances and Madrid were able to take their only chance in the game. Sometimes you only need that one chance which brings you the result and Madrid got that one chance.

Gerrard Speaks

Steven Gerrard has given his views after the loss against Madrid. He believes it is high time Liverpool get new blood into the team, especially in the midfield.

“Jordan and James Milner are not getting any younger. They’re still top players at this level, of course, and they’ll want to go on and do more. But for Liverpool, if you think about the next five, six, seven years, they’re going to need a midfielder, an eight, who can get goals, who can get double figures.

They are heavily reliant on the front three – or the front five if you include Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. But you always need one of those midfielders that’s going to get in the box and get you goals.”

Liverpool are in the market for new midfielders in the Summer. They have kept a couple of targets for themselves in the form of Aurelian Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham. Both of these players have shown their interest in playing under Klopp.
