Liverpool Pursuing Young Defender

Liverpool Stadium

It is almost the end of July and rather surprisingly, Liverpool still await their first summer signing in this transfer window. The Reds are known for not spending a lot but it is odd for any club to go this far in the summer without any recruitment.

New boss, Arne Slot, has appeared calm and content with his current squad. The Dutchman claims his side are not short of any stars and will be hard to replace with a new arrival. He has spoken of transparent communications with the technical director, Richard Hughes, who is reportedly working on a signing. He has high hopes for the new season and will look to improve their performance.

Liverpool Tracking 17-Year-Old Defender

Recently, six-time Ligue 1 champions, Bordeaux, relinquished their professional status after filing for bankruptcy. Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), earlier held talks with the French club for a potential takeover after an extended period of disastrous management. FSG eventually opted not to buy the club and dropped out of any further discussion which led to the unfortunate ending.

All the players at Bordeaux, both senior and academy, have become free agents after their contracts were terminated. The French club have been home to many superstars once upon a time like Aurelian Tchouameni, Jules Kounde, Zinedine Zidane, Laurent Blanc, and many more.

Liverpool sensed the opportunity to take one of their players, Mathys Angely. The Reds are pursuing the 17-year-old defender who is currently available on a free transfer. He made 5 senior appearances for Bordeaux last season and put pen to paper on a contract until 2028. With a towering stature of 6’3, the young defender ticks all the boxes desirable in a defender.

The Premier League club were reportedly monitoring the teenager’s contract situation and Bordeaux’s misfortune turned out to be a blessing in disguise. However, the Brexit rules will not allow them to get their hands on the player anytime soon. The club will have to wait for Angely till April when he turns 18. Liverpool are said to be closer to signing two young talents Alvin Ayman from Wolves and Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea.

Blow in Transfer Pursuit of Midfielder

Liverpool, who were said to be linked with Benfica prodigy, Joao Neves, have apparently lost the race to his signature. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are set to sign the 19-year-old talent after successful negotiations between the two clubs. The transfer deal, valued at approximately €70 million plus a player, is in the final stages. Only a few details remain to be resolved. Another Portuguese midfielder, Renato Sanches, who plays for PSG, has been included in the deal. João Neves, convinced by PSG’s project, has already approved the move.

Last season saw the rise of the youngster after he registered 3 goals and 2 assists in 54 matches. His impressive performances caught the eye of Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard included the breakout star in the Portuguese national team for Euro 2024. Many top clubs across Europe like Manchester United were also pursuing the starlet.

Renato Sanches, meanwhile, has failed to nail down a starting spot at PSG since moving from LOSC Lille. Sanches now looks set to return to Benfica where he first broke through and was brought in as one of the most sought-after young midfield talents on the planet.

Benfica had previously remained steadfast on João Neves’ €120 million release clause as the transfer window continued. However, PSG’s substantial offer, combined with favourable payment terms and the inclusion of Renato Sanches in the deal, has led to an agreement. All parties involved are expected to finalize the transfer this week.
