Liverpool might be lucky enough to pull Alonso for next season as manager

Bayern Munich might reconsider their pursuit of Xabi Alonso for their managerial vacancy. The club seeks a successor to Thomas Tuchel, who departs at season-end, with the Spaniard initially identified as a prime candidate. A former Bayern player, Alonso is currently with Bayer Leverkusen, attempting to challenge Bayern’s Bundesliga dominance.

Liverpool’s interest in Alonso, a former Anfield player, could spark a potential tug-of-war with Bayern Munich. However, reports from AZ suggest that Bayern may turn to Feyenoord’s Arne Slot as their next manager. The 45-year-old’s reputation continues to grow in Rotterdam.

Slot has been at the helm of the Eredivisie side since 2021, leading them to the league title last season. Additionally, he has made strides in Europe, thus helping the Dutch side in gaining a final spot at the Europa Conference League. However, they eventually lost.

Alonso and Slot both garnering attention of top clubs

Slot was on Tottenham’s radar last summer but he did opt to extend his stay with Feyenoord. He expressed his intention to move to a club outside the Netherlands once he decides to leave, having previously managing AZ Alkmaar in his career. However opting for Slot instead of Alonso will be problematic for Bayern. Since the former has aspirations of joining the Premier League one day.

Slot said: “My next step will not be a club in Holland. If that is my next step, then I’ve failed completely. The normal next step will be to go abroad and I’ve always said the best league in the world is the Premier League.”

There’s a possibility of Alonso facing Liverpool in the Europa League, as both teams are among the favorites for the competition. Leverkusen’s recent 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich showcased Alonso’s capabilities firsthand as a top manager.
