Liverpool looking to strike long-awaited Van der Berg’s deal

Liverpool

Liverpool could strike a £20m deal for Sepp van den Berg as early as next week, says one journalist. The Reds are open to talks.

Reports have reiterated that Liverpool could sell Sepp van den Berg next week. Essentially, the Reds are just waiting to get back from their preseason tour of the US.

Van den Berg has a role to play until then, with certain players still missing after the international tournaments. Liverpool won’t let him go until he’s offered cover – though, it’s also a chance to have a proper look at a player who excelled out on loan last season.

PSV Eindhoven are eager to secure Van den Berg, but do not want to pay over the odds.

Liverpool are seeking a fee of around €20 million for his signature this summer. Additionally, PSV are not willing to pay more than €12 million and they are the only bidder.

However, the report states that Liverpool quickly rejected this advance, with PSV failing to reach Liverpool’s asking price for the player.

It was claimed earlier this month that the Reds are looking to stand firm at their £16.9m price tag Van den Berg this summer as interest for his services increases.

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has affirmed that he still dreams of making a name for himself at Anfield despite his recent explosive interview.

Sepp van den Berg’s history in the game

After successfully progressing through the PEC Zwolle youth ranks since 2012. Van den Berg made his first team debut on 11 March 2018, coming on as a 45th minute substitute in a 2–0 league defeat at home to Groningen.

After joining Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in 2019, Van den Berg has only made four senior appearances for the Reds as he has spent two years on loan at Preston in the Championship and another with Schalke and Mainz in the Bundesliga. The decision-makers at Anfield value the centre-back at approximately £20 million ($25.7m). A number of European teams, including PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and Mainz are reportedly interested in signing the Dutchman, however, the Reds’ asking price may deter the interest.

The 22-year-old has struggled to stamp his authority at the Merseyside club in the last half a decade, managing only 271 minutes of game time across four appearances. The young centre-back prospect has embarked on three loan spells away from Liverpool, spending the two most recent campaigns in Germany.

Will Van den Berg end up in his homeland?

PSV Eindhoven’s interest in Sepp van den Berg is understandable. The 2023/24 Eredivisie winners are keen on bolstering their backline in the summer transfer window and have identified the 22-year-old wantaway Liverpool defender as their top target for the final month of the window.

The reports & rumors in the air suggest that the Reds are confident with the departure of the Dutchman. The Dutch-side PSV Eindhoven seems to be the only client interested in acquiring the defenders services.

The 22-year-old probably wants to embark a new journey, a new adventure as it seems. His time at Anfield was not much appreciable and to cherish.

On the other side, the Eredivisie’s reigning Champions PSV are subtly interested in the Dutchman. They wasted no time to place their bid for the defender. They approached Sepp van den Bergg with an initial bid worth of €10 million. However, the Reds rejected the initial bid in no time and are looking for a price for the 22-year-old.

The defender, though, believes his valuation – understood to be around £20m to £25m – is pricing him out of a move if he was to leave. ‘I know in today’s market (high prices) will happen,’ he said. ‘For the price they want for me, hmmm…

‘Liverpool may think it is right as I had a good season, if they want £20-£25million that is a lot more. Hopefully we can find a way. Maybe I stay, maybe I go. The first reaction from me is that it was quite high! It is also a compliment. But it makes it difficult, £20m is majorly high.’
