Liverpool fancy versatile defender from RB Leipzig

Liverpool

Mohamed Simakan, a 24yo defender from RB Leipzig has attracted interests from various teams in Europe. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid being the chief suitors among them.

Lfc are looking to replace Joel Matip. They are searching the market for young central defenders.

Previously, Liverpool held talks with Eintracht Frankfurt for Willian Pacho. His market value was at around $70M. Liverpool are now following Mohamed Simakan. He has a £38 million price tag. He will be a better pick for Liverpool and will fall under Arne Slot’s wage structure as well.

Is Simakan a good fit for Liverpool?

Simakan’s exploits came in light during the group stage matches of the champions league back in October 22. He defended relentlessly throughout the match and was a step ahead of everyone. He was deployed at right-back and can even play as a centre-back. His versatility has attracted Liverpool. He will fit in perfectly under Slot’s total football style of play.

What makes Simakan so good is his impeccable positional awareness while defending. He constantly scans around the defensive half of his field and changes his defensive posture accordingly. This allows him to sniff out any potential plays. His awareness paired with his amazing speed enables him to stop attackers and intercept balls. His abilities and conviction in decision making have been talked about since his Strasbourg days.

Liverpool will benefit from Simakan’s abilities on the ball as well. His progressive passes and progressive carries are an important part of his game. According to Fbref he has a pass completion rate of 85% as compared other centre-backs in the top 5 leagues. Simakan will provide a wide range of options to Liverpool’s defence and attack.

Liverpool has been linked with many players over the span of this transfer window. But they have bought in very few players. They will not want to miss this opportunity of completing their centre-back duo. Simakan will pair up with academy graduate Jarell Quansah incase Liverpool are able to reach an agreement with Leipzig.
