Liverpool completes an impressive week, by winning against Southampton in the Premier League. The Reds walk away with a comfortable 4-0 victory as they close the gap at the top of the league table.

It was an exciting week for Liverpool as they had three home matches within 7 days. Their 4-0 victory against Southampton meant that the club across the 3 home matches scored 10 goals, while conceded 0.

However, the victory will not change the standing of Liverpool as they remain third on the Premier League table with 28 points. Southampton on the other hand drops to 15th on the table, though they do have a 5 point cushion between them and the relegation zone.

LIVERPOOL 4 – 0 SOUTHAMPTON: TEAM NEWS

Liverpool made multiple changes to the side that won 2-0 against Porto in the Champions League. In defence, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk all returned in place of Neco Williams, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Joel Matip.

Alex Oxlade -Chamberlain and Tyler Morton moved back to the bench as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson took their place in the midfield. Upfront Diogo Jota made it into the starting 11 in place of Takumi Minamino.

Southampton made changes to their system as they moved to a back three. This meant that Lyanco came into the defence. Kyle Walker-Peters, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Ibrahima Diallo, who all started against the defeat to Norwich were moved to the bench. The other players to make it into the starting eleven are Armando Broja in attack and Romain Perraud in the left-back role.

LIVERPOOL 4 – 0 SOUTHAMPTON: ANALYSIS

The home side made a quick start to the game when Jota found himself at the end of an excellent ball from Robertson in the 2nd minute. Jota then scored his second of the night when he put in the ball inside the net from a cross from Mohamed Salah.

Southampton soon found themselves three goals down when Thiago took his shot from the left side of the box. The visitors did receive some chances, mainly due to mistakes from the home side. But goalkeeper Alisson Becker was up for the challenge every time.

The final goal of the match came from Van Dijk, who put his right leg through a well-taken corner by Alexander- Arnold. Liverpool did take their pedal off the game, though Salah and Mane tried to score their share of the night. Southampton was completely outclassed by a brilliant Liverpool, who at the moment seem to score for fun.

WHAT NEXT?

The Premier League sides will not have much time to think as they will return for the midweek fixtures. Liverpool will make the short trip to Everton for the first Merseyside derby of the season. With the current form, the Reds look to be in a position to record another victory.

Southampton on the other hand will try to get some points on board after back to back defeats. Their next challenge is at home when they host Leicester City on Wednesday night.
