Journalist reveals Arsenal are trying to sell 30-year-old goalkeeper since ‘last couple of windows’

About Football Express UK

Daily Star journalist Paul Brown recently revealed that Arsenal will once again try and sell their goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer. Moreover, Brown also claimed that the club has been making efforts to facilitate the 30-year-old’s exit since the last couple of transfer windows. But since no club came up with an offer for the ‘keeper, Arsenal will put him on the market again. Furthermore, some of the clubs have shown interest in Leno this time according to Brown. The German has played over 100 games for Arsenal but will reportedly move on this summer.

Arsenal signed Leno in the summer of 2018 from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around £20 million. The ‘keeper arrived with a lot of hype and even lived up to it as well in his debut season. However, two back-to-back poor seasons from Leno cost the club a lot. As a result, Arsenal signed Sheffield United‘s young goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale last summer for £30 million. Ramsdale has excelled the expectations and has more than justified his price tag. Leno had to take up the bench-warmer’s role but now wants an exit to play somewhere else.

Brown says the goalkeeper will get a move away from Arsenal

Leno has just one year left on his current deal and wants a move in a bid for regular game-time. As evident Arsenal are ready to part ways with their goalkeeper as well. Moreover, the club is well aware that this summer could be the last chance they receive a fee for him. However, Leno may not attract offers in double figures as his current market value stands at £9 million. But the Gunners are hopeful they could get around £10-£12 million from the outgoing ‘keeper.

While writing for GiveMeSport, Paul Brown was further asked whether Leno would accept another season on the bench to which the journalist replied,

“No, absolutely not. Arsenal effectively moved on from Leno some months ago. Arteta doesn’t trust him with the ball at his feet and he doesn’t have a future at the club, and he knows it. They have been trying to sell him for the last couple of windows and I think this is the time where he will get a move.”

Moreover, Arsenal have reportedly signed American goalkeeper Matt Turner from the MLS side New England Revolution. This could further ensure that Leno’s time at the Emirates is done. The German shot-stopper has featured mostly in the cup games this season, playing a combined 4 games in the FA Cup and the League Cup. However, prior to Ramsdale’s arrival, Leno made a massive 117 appearances for Arsenal since 2018.

But this could be the end of the road for the goalkeeper at Arsenal. Many of the Bundesliga teams have reportedly shown interest in Bernd Leno. Moreover, the ‘keeper also fancies a move back to Germany than remain in England. Further on, Benfica are keeping tabs on Leno as well but are hesitant to pay a fee of around £9 million for him.
