Joao Cancelo suffered a facial injury after being assaulted by robbers

Premier League player

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has encountered a tragic experience after four cowards tried to attempt a home robbery on Thursday night.

The Portuguese fullback is experiencing the best form of his career, scoring three goals and notching up seven assists in 25 appearances in all competitions. He also helped his side in keeping 11 clean sheets in the Premier League and the 27-year-old aided Pep Guardiola’s side to stay at the top of the league with 50 points in 20 games.

The former Juventus man posted a story on Instagram and revealed this incident. The defender suffered a facial injury and the robbers took jewellery. Thankfully the player and his partner are safe along with their baby daughter. Cancelo posted(via SportsMole):

“Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family. When you show resistance this is what happens. They managed to take all my jewellery and leave me with my face with this state. I don’t know how there are people with such meanness. The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all ok. After so many obstacles in my life, this is just one more that I will overcome. Firm and strong, like always.”

How this incident could impact the performance of Joao Cancelo?

The Portuguese has started the season brilliantly and would be hoping to maintain his form until the end of this campaign. The 27-year-old is leading the race to become the club’s player of the season award along with fellow countryman Bernardo Silva. So, the defender would not want to allow this tragic experience to impact his performance.

The Citizens are currently eight points clear at the top and are looking likely to retain the Premier League title. Meanwhile, having lost the Champions League final last term, Pep Guardiola’s side will be desperate to win the elite European competition this season and this could be their main objective for this season.

Pep Guardiola has won every possible trophy on multiple occasions since arriving at the blue half of Manchester. But, the Champions League is the only prize which he hasn’t won since leaving Barcelona. So, given the Spaniard’s lofty ambitions he sets for his team, Guardiola will not be happy if he can’t bring the European title at Etihad Stadium. So, this season could be their season if they can continue performing like this until the end of this season.
