Jason Knight nears Derby County exit

About Football Express UK

Jason Knight is set to leave Derby as he is placed on the transfer list due to the club’s financial difficulties. As a result, Derby County is reportedly considering sanctioning the sale of midfielder Jason Knight.

His contract with the Rams will expire in the summer of 2023, having signed a new deal two years ago. However, owing to administrative issues they might consider his departure.

According to The Times, Knight is nearing a departure from Wayne Rooney’s side. Meanwhile, Knight has expressed his desire to stay at Derby. However, due to the current management issues, his stay at the club remains bleek.

The 20-year-old midfielder started his youth career in Cabinteely, eventually moving to Derby County. He earned his senior cap for The Rams under Cocu. He has been one of Derby’s best players since he was given his full debut by Cocu in 2019.

The Irish midfielder has 19 appearances this season and has scored two goals and has assisted twice. However, his midfield role has been appreciated by the fanbase because of his tireless work rate.

Derby boss Rooney showed his dismay regarding the situation at an interview with Derbyshire Live.

“Any decisions made like [Graham] Shinnie, for instance, will be through the administrators. I want to keep all the players.

I saw a report saying I told the players that they could leave, which is not the case. Maybe that has been misinterpreted.

What I said to the players is if you want any information, if clubs are in [for you] there is nothing I can do. You have to go to the administrators, they are the ones who are making the decisions.”

Derby’s financial crisis

The Rams are in a serious financial crisis with the club’s administrators are yet to sell the club. As a result, Derby had to sell Graeme Shinnie for a nominal fee of around £30,000. The League One club Wigan Athletic is about to sign the Shinnie.

Similarly, the Rams had to sell their 39-year-old veteran defender Phil Jagielka to Stoke City due to the issues. Knight is one of Derby’s most valuable assets at the moment. However, his future seems to be out of Derby due to the club’s perilous state.

Interested clubs

It is reported that Leeds United, Burnley and Newcastle United are interested in Knight. Leeds United seems to be the favourites to sign the midfielder.

Knight’s is valued at around £8 million and the Rams might expect some financial boost by selling him.
