Spalletti and Italy have been criticised by former Juventus star, Fabrizio Ravanelli. He believes that the Italian team are gutless and afraid to play with the ball. He criticised the tactics of Spalletti especially his formation and playstyle.
Italy have been knocked out from the Euro 2024 by Switzerland in the Round of 16. They lost 2-0 against the Swiss where Freuler and Vargas wrote their names on the scoresheet. Italy were fully dominated in that match and Spalletti took a heavy blow from both the fans and the media because of it. Right now, his job is at risk due to his underperformances.
What went wrong with Italy and Spalletti?
Italy are going through the worst phase ever in their history. Even though they are the winners of the previous Euro, they did not qualify for the last two World Cups. This time, they could not even reach the Quarter Finals of the Euro this year. Many have questioned the Italian team regarding their tactics, understanding and mentality. But people have started to question the quality of game played in the Serie A.

According to Football Italia, Fabrizio Ravanelli had some pretty harsh words for Spalletti and Italy. The 1996 Champions League winner did not hold back on whatever he said. He analyzed the whole game of Italy vs Switzerland during an interview with Radio Deejay.
“One of the biggest errors was that this Italy side can’t play with a four-man defence. There are players who can’t be part of the national team. If you are dynamic, you can’t play at high levels nowadays. It’s impossible that all players were not fit, and I saw fear in their eyes” – Ravanelli on Italy and their tactics.
The former Azzuri striker also had some strong words for the Italian manager Luciano Spalletti.
“The coach must instil a certain mentality. The national team didn’t represent us. There was no involvement or desire.”, said Ravanelli on what Spalletti should do with the squad.
It is clear that Fabrizio Ravanelli very well knows what weight the badge and jersey carry. He stated that the players in the Italian squad do not understand that or rather unable to understand it.
What is next for Italy?
The Italian national squad are under a huge amount of pressure right now. They could not perform in this year’s Euro. Italy have been very inconsistent and their playing style did not give any reassurance to the fans. Still, it does not seem that Spalletti is going anywhere.
The Italian federation would be looking for solutions which can improve the squad. To be fair, Italy does have a young squad. They also have a good squad depth. Their goal for the future, for now, is to qualify for the next World Cup held in the USA. They will be trying their best to break their streak of not qualifying for the competition.
