Italian giants intent on ‘convincing’ Chelsea to buy a defender

Chelsea Denzel Dumfries

Last summer, Thomas Tuchel was intent on acquiring a right-back to add to his reinforcements. Thus, transfer rumors regarding Denzel Dumfries‘s potential move to Stamford Bridge often propped up.

After an excellent showing at Euros 2020, Dumfries’ stature in football seemed to go up. He moved to Inter from PSV that very summer. He was then tasked with replacing Ashraf Hakimi after the Moroccan’s departure to PSG and has somewhat succeeded. Chelsea’s interest in him since then has only grown stronger.

However, last summer Inter were likely to sell defender Milan Skriniar. Due to a desire not to sell two key players, they rejected offers for Dumfries from the Blues.

However, the situation has changed now at Inter. Skriniar has remained at the club, and the management needs a substantial €60m sum to balance their accounts by June.

How would Dumfries’ move to Chelsea work?

In the summer, the west London side reportedly planned to ‘include the Dutchman in the deal for Romelu Lukaku’. While Lukaku moved to Inter on a loan, this did not go through back then.

Now though, with things very different, the Inter management is more than willing to sell off Dumfries’ services. One stipulation which would make a winter move viable would be the option to keep Dumfries’ at loan until the end of the season.

There are hopes that Dumfries will make some splendid showings at the World Cup, to drive up his transfer value.
