Is Hugo Lloris set to leave Tottenham Hotspur?

About Football Express UK

Tottenham Hotspur could have to part ways with club captain Hugo Lloris. This is after the French international has his contract end in the next summer.

The contract negotiations have not gone as per the plan between Lloris and Tottenham. As a result, the Premier League side could see him leave them for free in the summer.

In a recent press conference, new Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was open to talking about his captain’s future. The Italian manager looks interested in extending the stay of Lloris, but nothing is final.

HUGO LLORIS AN EVERPRESENT FOR TOTTENHAM

Hugo Lloris joined Tottenham in the summer of 2012 from French side Lyon. He has been one of the important players of the club over the last decade and is a good shot-stopper.

Over this time the 34-year-old has appeared 388 times for the club across all competitions. He conceded 435 goals during this period while he kept 132 clean sheets. (all stats taken from Transfermarkt)

His commitment to the club was one of the prime reasons for Tottenham to make him their club captain. Though Lloris alongside Spurs were unfortunate not to win any major silverware.

But the goalkeeper garnered huge success with his national side France. Lloris has appeared 136 times for his national side and is currently the captain of the team. He also successfully led the 2018 squad to win the FIFA World Cup and recently won the UEFA Nations with France.

IS IT TIME FOR THE FRENCHMAN

Though Lloris has been extremely successful with France, questions were always raised about him. The shot-stopper was never considered as the top goalkeeper during his time. He was often scrutinised for mistakes and errors he made during the games.

The World Cup winner is also criticised for his lack of ability to play out from the back. All these often masked his ability as a goalkeeper. His excellent saves, quick reflexes and leadership qualities are second to none.

At 34, Lloris however is considering a move away from London. He has recently been linked with a move to MLS or even back to his home nation. This is considered to be one of the reasons why Hugo has not extended his current contract.

With the arrival of Conte, there will surely be changes happening in the Tottenham team. The Italian likes to play out from the back and Lloris might not be the best player for such a style. There are also rumours linking Spurs with goalkeepers in the transfer market, most notably Jordan Pickford of Everton.

But Conte would not be looking to let go of one of the leaders of his squad especially when there are other positions to address. Ultimately the decision will fall to Lloris, who in most likelihood will be offered a short term extension option by the Spurs board.
