Frenkie De Jong throws his weight behind Manchester United over Chelsea

Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong is said to be favoring a move to Manchester United rather than Chelsea during this transfer window. The Dutchman’s future remains under intense speculation. However, United are keen on bringing the player to Old Trafford.

Chelsea has now entered the race to sign the talented midfielder. Moreover, Todd Boehly has traveled to Barcelona to discuss a potential transfer. However, the Mirror reports that De Jong would choose the Red Devils over Chelsea. The 25-year-old is keen on making a reunion with former Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag.

Barcelona Joan Laporta has insisted on more than one occasion that De Jong is not for sale. The Catalan club is eager to hold on to the player.

Laporta recently said,

” There are clubs that want him, not just United. We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay.”

“Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him.”

Again at the unveiling of Franck Kessie Laporta again said,

” Frenkie is not for sale. He is a Barcelona player. We don’t want to transfer him.”

It is believed that United are confident in signing the Dutchman. However, the deal has been held up due to Barcelona owing the player £17m in deferred payments and bonuses.

De Jong’s first choice is Barcelona but due to their precarious financial condition, they are in a difficult position. Moreover, De Jong’s wages are set to increase in the club next season. United are preparing a fee of £56.2m which will increase further with add-ons. De Jong featured in 138 games while scoring 12 goals and 17 assists.

What did Frenkie De Jong say about his future?

De Jong said to ESPN,

” I prefer to stay with Barcelona. Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age. I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”

De Jong told reporters in June,

” You are always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.”

“But I think I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and feel fine there so there is no news.”
