Euro 2020: Spain vs Switzerland Preview and Predictions

Fulham

Spain face Switzerland in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020 at Gazprom Arena, Russia on 2nd July. Both the sides were the big scorers in their Round of 16 and the best performers in the competition so far.

Spain defeated Croatia after extra time by a score of 5-3. Likewise, Switzerland were the surprise kings defeating World Champions France by penalties (5-4) after both the sides were tied at 3-3.

The Spaniards are the first team in the Euros to score five goals in successive matches. However, their leaky defence still remains as a concern. Are the Swiss setting their sights on yet another miracle or will the possession-based Spain dominate the match ?

Spain vs Switzerland : Preview

Spain had a difficult campaign in the 2018 World Cup as they were ousted by hosts Russia in the Round of 16. Since then, La Furia Roja have been quite impressive and are unbeaten in their last 29 matches so far.

However, there has been a lot of concern about the form of Alvaro Morata and now, he gave a befitting reply to his doubters after a magnificent performance against Croatia. Also, the local talented players such as Pablo Sarabia, Unai SImon as well as Pedri have been creating an impact. Aymeric Laporte, who changed his representative nation from France to Spain, had been doing an excellent job for the Reds.

In contrast, Switzerland just won once in their group stage and were just lucky enough as a third-placed team to make their place in the knockouts.

But, the Swiss have defeated Spain only once, back in the 2010 World Cup and have not been enjoying a great time against them. Additionally, this fixture is a special one because it would be possession-based traditional Spain against the Modernized attacking Switzerland.

Recently, in the Nations League they lost 1-0 and drew 1-1 at home to them. 22 matches have been played between both sides and the Spanish managed to win 15 out of them. Whereas, remaining six matches ended as draws.

Spain vs Switzerland : Team News

Granit Xhaka is unavailable as he is suspended for this match as he was booked in the match against France. Above all, there are no injury concerns for Vladimir Petkovic as he expects yet another miracle.

Similarly, Luis Enrique has no injured players in his team and despite the own goal, Unai Simon would still be their guardian of the goalpost.

Predicted Line-ups and Score

Spain would play in their typical 4-3-3 formation.

Whereas, Petkovic would field a 3-4-1-2 formation and Steven Zuber might be included in place of Granit Xhaka.

Predicted Score : Spain 3 – 1 Switzerland
