Euro 2020 Final: Italy vs England Preview and Prediction

Premier League player

England will welcome Italy at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday night in the final of Euro 2020.

The Three Lions have reached the final of a major competition for the first time in 55 years. The last time they won a Silverware in an international competition was at the Wembley Stadium in the World Cup 1966. So, this will be a great opportunity for a talented English side to make history.

On the other hand, Italy have been much more successful than the English in recent years. However, they failed to reach the World Cup 2018 and last won a trophy in the 2006 World Cup.

Italy vs England Preview:

Italy have been in tremendous form since the beginning of the tournament. But, Roberto Mancini’s side were outplayed by Spain in the semi-final at times and had to sit deep and defend.

The Azzurri have only won once the European Championship in 1968. They will be looking to break their curse of this competition, after failing to win it on the previous two occasions, despite reaching the finals in 2000 and 2012.

Roberto Mancini’s side were outsiders from the contender to lift this competition. However, as the tournament progressed, they have emerged as a potential candidate to lift Euro 2020

Meanwhile, England have shown their defensive qualities in the Euro 2020 campaign. They have only conceded one goal in the whole tournament. With the abundance of attacking firepower Gareth Southgate has at his disposal, he continues to concentrate on the defensive structure and keeping the clean sheets.

The England boss has been criticised for his defensive approach but he stuck to his philosophy which has proven to be right so far in this competition. With only one step to go from lifting the first European Championship, England will have the advantage to play at home.

Team News:

Italy will be without one of the best and the contender for the player of the tournament Leonardo Spinazzola. Emerson Palmieri came into the side for the Roma man, but his lack of quality going forward has restricted Mancini’s side to build attack from the left. Apart from that, there are not any significant absentees for Italy ahead of the final against England.

Gareth Southgate has a fully fit squad to choose from for this encounter. The English boss has the luxury to change the personnel in the attack and get the same outcome. It will be interesting to see what formation Southgate will decide to go for this game will he go for a back three or four.

Italy possible starting lineup(4-3-3):

Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Emerson; Jorginho, Barella, Verratti; Chiesa, Immobile, Insigne

England possible starting lineup(4-2-3-1):

Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Rice, Phillips; Saka, Mount, Sterling; Kane

Italy 1-1 England: England to win on penalties

England will get the advantage of home support in the final against Italy. Having been involved in the tiebreaker has proven to be a disadvantage for any teams this summer. With Italy already featured in the shoot-out in the semi-final, England will be victorious in penalties.
