Euro 2020: England vs Croatia Preview and Predictions

England host Croatia at Wembley Stadium in the first match of Group D on Sunday. The hosts have achieved qualification in style by winning 7 out of eight Euro 2020 qualifiers of Group A.

The Three Lions enter into this tournament as one of the favourites to win it. After a surprising performance in the 2018 World Cup, they are aiming for a revenge against Croatia after the latter defeated them in the semifinals of the World Cup.

The Checkered ones however have an experienced squad as compared to England’s young guns. The world of football would be definitely looking forward to this clash of the titans!

England had been one of the strong sides in Europe and proved themselves in the World Cup 2018. Now, in the European Championship, the squad offers more youth and energy to the team and youngsters like Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount would be keen on creating an impact.

Despite being one of the most decorated nations in the Europe, they have never won a Euro Cup. Their best finishes would be third place finishes back in 1968 and 1996. However, recently in the 2018-19 Nations League, they finished as third and thus, they still have the quality.

Skipper Harry Kane is also in top form this season after finishing with most goals and assists in the Premier League this season.

In comparison, Croatia has generally weakened after their fairytale runner-up performance in the last World Cup. Since then, they have lost to Portugal, Sweden, France, Slovenia and minnows like Hungary. They have also lost in an unconvincing manner, 6-0 to Spain in the Nations League 2018.

However, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic can still inspire them to an even better level. Both sides have met just ten times. England winning five, Croatia winning three and the rest two matches ended as draws. The recent one was in favour of the Croatians as Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic cancelled out early opener from Kieran Trippier.

Harry Maguire has returned to training but it would be highly unlikely that he would be risked for this match. Gareth Southgate also has to think about who should be in the forwards section as Bukayo Saka is also injured.

For Zlatko Dalic’s side, Dejan Lovren may not be featuring in this crunch encounter. He would not be facing any other issues regarding the team selection.

Predicted Lineups and Score

England would be opting for their traditional 4-3-3 formation and Tyler Mings replacing Harry Maguire.

Croatia would also be fielding a 4-3-3 with Duje Caleta-Car replacing Dejan Lovren.
