Euro 2020: Belgium vs Portugal Preview and Prediction

Belgium will encounter Portugal in the round of 16 stages of Euro 2020 on Sunday at Estadio de la Cartuja.

The Red Devils qualified for the knock-out stages by finishing at the top of Group B and Fernando Santos’ side reached the round of 16 stages by finishing as the top four best third-placed teams.

The world’s best-ranked team Roberto Martínez’s side are the favourites to win the tie and one of the favourites to lift the Euro 2020 title. On the other hand, the reigning European Champions will not go down without fighting and they will be looking to make an upset by knocking the world’s number one team out of the Euro 2020

Belgium vs Portugal preview:

Belgium are coming into the knock-out stage on the back of perfect results in the group phase. The Red Devils won three out of three games with scoring seven and conceding just one time.

Roberto Martínez will be getting full fit Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard for this encounter who were recovering their full fitness in the group stage. This will give a much-needed boost ahead of this game.

The golden generation of Belgian football are coming at the twilight of their career and this would be their last major tournament to lift Silverware for their country. This is the now or never moment for Martínez’s side.

On the other hand, Portugal will be the underdogs for this encounter which will allow them to play counter-attacking football. The Portuguese team will be hoping to see Cristiano Ronaldo magic for this game.

The 36-year-old has matched the record of highest goal scorer in international football. He scored two goals in the last game and equalized Ali Daei’s goal tally. One more goal against the Belgians will take him to the top goal scorer in the history of international football.

The Juventus man is also currently leading the goal scoring chart for Euro 2020. Ronaldo has scored five goals in three group stage matches. And all eyes will be on the Portugal talisman to show his class yet again on Sunday against Belgium.

Team News:

After Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard have recovered from their respective injuries, the Red Devils currently do not have any significant absentees. Having featured in the previous game in the midfield pivot, De Bruyne is looking likely to be linked up among the attacking trio along with Hazard and Romelu Lukaku.

Danilo Pereira and Nelson Semedo are in doubt for the encounter after suffering injuries in the previous games. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if Bruno Fernandes starts against Belgium or not as without him Portugal looked better defensively in the last game against France.

Belgium possible starting lineup(3-4-2-1):

Courtois; Alderweireld, Boyata, Vertonghen; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, T Hazard; E Hazard, Lukaku, De Bruyne

Portugal possible starting lineup(4-3-3):

Patricio; Dalot, Dias, Pepe, Guerreiro; Moutinho, Danilo, Sanches; Bernardo, Ronaldo, Jota

Belgium 2-1 Portugal

Belgium have tremendous attacking power and it will be hard for Portugal to handle them in this game. Santos’ side will be looking to hit the ageing backline of the Red Devils, but their attackers will provide them the important victory.
