Chelsea midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, has found himself in the centre of a huge controversy. On Sunday, Argentina won by 1-0 against Colombia to win the Copa America second time in a row. The Argentine national streamed the Albiceleste on Instagram celebrating and singing racist chants . The chants were aimed towards the French players with African ancestry. These exact chants emerged two years ago after Argentina beat France to win the World Cup. These discriminatory and transphobic chants were particularly concerned with Kylian Mbappe and his romantic life.
The social media has flooded with comments where fans have criticised the player’s actions. Many Chelsea fans have found it hard to digest and are demanding corrective action.
The French Football Federation has issued a statement condemning this incident. FFF President, Philippe Diallo, confirmed the Federation’s next step of filing a legal complaint with FIFA against their Argentine counterpart. Enzo alone was recognisable in the footage. It is hard to determine the identity of other players involved in this case.
Chelsea Players Angry with Enzo Fernandez
A large part of Chelsea’s squad consists of French players are angry with Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea defender, Wesley Fofana, called out Enzo by reposting the viral video on social media saying ‘uninhibited racism’. Three Chelsea players including Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto and Fofana have unfollowed their Argentine teammates on social media. Other players who are also considered to be at the receiving end of the derision are Lesley Ugochukwu, Christopher Nkunku, and Benoit Badiashile.
Enzo Fernandez has since made a post apologising for his actions and accepting the harm and ridicule he has caused to many. He admitted the offensive content in the song used in their Copa America celebrations were inexcusable and unnecessary.

Chelsea to Take Disciplinary Action
Chelsea have announced they will take disciplinary action over the video uploaded by Enzo Fernandez. The Premier League club launched an investigation to determine the seriousness of the issue. They have issued a statement condemning the actions and reaffirming their pride in having people from all walks of life. There is every possibility that he may have endangered his future at the club.
