England have been dealt an injury scare ahead of the Euro this summer after Trent Alexander-Arnold (TAA) hobbled off with a muscular injury in the latter stages of the friendly game against Austria.
The Liverpool full-back was hobbled off the pitch in the dying moments of the game. As he appeared to pull a muscle while kicking the ball upfield.
“Trent is obviously not a good situation, that he’s had to walk off the pitch and in some discomfort,”. The England boss Southgate said after the friendly against Austria. In addition to that, he further said “It looks like it’s thigh but in terms of the full extent we don’t know yet.”
According to reports from Sky Sports, Scans have shown a thigh injury that will sideline Trent Alexander-Arnold for around six weeks. TAA is out of Euro 2020. He has suffered a grade two quad tear. He will say his goodbyes to his England teammates and depart the camp on Thursday night.
England will be without the service of Trent, who is now officially ruled out of the tournament. It would be interesting to see who could Southgate pick as a replacement for TAA ahead of Euro 2020.
Who can replace TAA ahead of Euro 2020
Gareth Southgate will not confirm a replacement for Alexander-Arnold until after Sunday’s warm-up fixture. It will be the last match for The Three Lions against Romania, before the start of the tournament. In an interview Southgate said
“All the (including the 33-man provisional squad) players are going to stay with us through to the end of Sunday’s game anyway”. He further added, “Obviously we’ll make an assessment on the whole squad once we’ve got through that game.”
“I’m very conscious we’ve got another 90 minutes to get through and that alone is a bit of a challenge for us, really.”
However, there were already 4 right backs including TAA in the England 26 man squad for Euro 2020. So it is quite possible that Southgate might bring in an attacking option rather than adding another defender. Jesse Lingard, who was unable to make the cut in the initial 26 man squad could now possibly be in the front line to be included in the team.
England will be playing Croatia to kick off their campaign on June 13th at Wembley. Southgate still has plenty of time to analyze TAA’s replacement ahead of Euro 2020.
