ECHO’s John Aldridge urges Liverpool to let go 28-year-old midfielder in a bid to rebuild

Liverpool

ECHO columnist John Albridge in his recent column has shared his opinions on what needs to be done at Anfield for next season. Further on, Albridge believes that the Reds should help Jurgen Klopp rebuild the midfield for next season. Liverpool have had injury scares of late, possibly denting their quadruple chances. Fabinho was the first casualty, after sustaining a hamstring injury against Aston Villa.

Further on, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah picked up knocks against Chelsea in the FA Cup final. Albridge has advice for the Liverpool top brass that they need to cash in on one particular midfielder this summer. He adds that the club should further use the money in strengthening the midfield with quality additions.

Over the past few seasons, Liverpool have fiercely competed for the Premier League title with Manchester City. However, the Reds have lifted the title on only one occasion in the last four seasons. Albridge suggests that quality in the middle of the park has proved to be the difference. City boasts a massive depth in the midfield with players in De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Gundogan, Fernandinho, and the emerging Cole Palmer. Liverpool on the other hand only have a few filled with quality, in Fabinho, Thiago, Keita, Henderson, and Curtis Jones.

Albridge feels £16 million rated Liverpool midfielder should go

While Fabinho and Thiago have barely missed games with injuries, Keita and Henderson seem to be injury-prone. As a result, Albridge feels there should be new and quality additions to the midfield of Liverpool. But they first need to sell some to accommodate some. According to Albridge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain should be the one to leave Anfield next season.

The 28-year-old midfielder signed for Liverpool in 2017 from Arsenal for a fee of £35 million. Since then, Chamberlain has been used by Klopp as the one to see off the games. But nonetheless, the midfielder has played some crucial minutes for the Reds as well. However, he was never going to be a starter at Liverpool, and his time may be up at the club.

Albridge writes that at 28, Chamberlain is still in the prime age of a footballer. His contract runs till the summer of 2023, but Albridge wants that Liverpool sells the midfielder for a decent fee this summer. Furthermore, the columnist feels that the fee should be invested in singing a new midfielder who would fight for a starting place.

Albridge wrote,

“I hope he (Chamberlain) finds a really good club and does well in the future, and that Liverpool get the right money for him to put back into the team because we need strengthening in midfield, everyone knows that”.

The suggestion from Albridge looks a benefitting one for all the parties. Chamberlain has a lot of football left in him and could get regular minutes somewhere else. Liverpool would get the money that could help them add new signings.
