Columbia also started with a bang as they defeated minnows, Ecuador 1-0 in this decorated competition. Whereas, Paraguay needed to come from behind to win against 10-men Bolivia. Let’s have a look at the team of the best players in this whole week.
Defenders who impressed so far in the Copa America 2021
Eugenio Mena (Chile), Guillermo Maripan (Chile), Marquinhos (Brazil) and Daniel Munoz (Colombia) were the star defenders of the week in the Copa America. Among the four, Marquinhos would be the best performer as he also grabbed a goal while also ensuring proper defending.
Chile’s defensive pair comprising of Mena and Maripan were impressive at their left-back and centre-back roles in their 1-1 draw against Argentina. They almost cancelled out multiple attempts from the opponent forwards. However, Colombia’s Daniel Munoz was well balancing the attack and defense against Ecuador, who despite lost the match gaining more possession. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (Argentina) was impressive in his first international competition. Despite he conceded a goal, he was able to prevent more goals.
Midfielders of the Week
Rodrigo de Paul (Argentina) , Casemiro (Brazil) and Edwin Cardona (Colombia) were the ones who were a cut above the rest. Cardona was the hero for the Colombians in their tough-fought 1-0 win over Ecuador and he was back to his best form for his country.
Similarly, Casemiro was brilliant as the skipper and was doing a great job in protecting the Selecao defence. Whereas, de Paul, who is now rumoured to a big money move to Atletico Madrid was having a good match for La Albiceleste.
The Forwards who rose to the occasion in the Copa America 2020
Angel Romero (Paraguay), Eduardo Vargas (Chile) and Lionel Messi (Argentina) were the outstanding goalscorers of the week. Messi made his impact after scoring an unreal freekick goal against Arturo Vidal’s Chile. However, Eduardo Vargas scored the equaliser as Vidal’s penalty miss resulted into a rebound.
However, Angel Romero had the best week as he scored a double to inspire La Albirroja in a 3-1 comeback win against minnows, Bolivia.
Here’s the Team of the week of this year’s Copa America.
Matchweek 2 is even exciting as Luis Suarez would be keen on playing his long-time buddy, Messi as Uruguay play their first ever match in Copa America against Argentina. Whereas, Chile face Boliva in Group B. In the Group A, Brazil face Peru and Colombia lock horns with Venezuela.
