Copa America 2021: Matchday 1 Summary

After all the speculations about Copa America will even be taking place this year or not, the tournament has finally begun on 13th June 2021.

The 47th edition of Copa America, which is the international men’s football championship organized by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL was initially supposed to happen in 2020 but was unable to take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic in South America. After being postponed to 2021 the tournament was originally going to take place in Argentina and Colombia. However, now it currently taking place in Brazil as both Argentina and Colombia were removed as the co-host.

Now that the tournament is on its way taking place in Brazil, let’s have a look at the Matchday 1 of Copa America 2021.

Copa America 2021: Match 1- Brazil vs Venezuela

Brazil took on Venezuela to kick off the tournament. The host were always the favourites to win their opening match against Venezuela. And, thus nobody could prevent it from happening as Brazil kick off their Copa America 2021 campaign in style by beating their opponent 3 goals to nil.

Neymar, the star of the match providing 1 goal and 1 assist in the opening fixture of the tournament. With this win, Brazil sits comfortably at the top of Group B. The defending champions will play Peru in their next match.

Copa America 2021: Match 2- Colombia vs Ecuador

The second match was a story of a solo goal by the former host Colombia. As they beat Ecuador by 1 goal to nil. The no. 10 Edwin Cardona gave the Los Cafeteros lead at the end of the first half. While Colombia continued to maintain the lead in the second half. This means they now sit second just below Brazil in Group B.

Colombia will now be looking forward to play Venezuela in their next match.

Copa America 2021: Match 3- Argentina vs Chile

The rematch of the finals of Copa America 2016. Argentina might have a feeling of revenge coming into this match. Moreover, Lionel Messi might have some harsh memories alive in him coming into this match. Which even provoked him to announce retirement during that time. Unlike the 2016 finals, Lionel Messi converted a free-kick to surpass his rival Cristiano Ronaldo in all-time free-kick conversions.

However, Chile were never going to give up that easily and thus Eduardo Vargas bought his team back in the game by scoring an equalizer. Just like the 2016 finals the match yet again ended as a draw. And, thus the Grup A Opening fixture was won by no one.

Copa America 2021: Match 4- Paraguay vs Bolivia

The second match of Group A saw the first red card of the tournament as Jaume Cuellar the Bolivia striker was send-off at the end of the first half. After being 1 nil up in the first half Bolivia blew the lead playing with 10 men in the second half. Alejandro Romero breaks the deadlock for Paraguay followed by a brace for Angel Romero giving Paraguay a victory by 3 goals to 1 in their opening fixture.

Matchday 1 has set the tournament nicely and the ground is all set for Matchday 2. The second Matchday will see a battle between the two South American giants and Argentina will take on Uruguay. The Copa America 2021 will see the reunion of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez ahead of Matchday 2.
