Chelsea to submit £69m bid for Juventus centre-back

About Football Express UK

Chelsea are on the verge of snapping up Juventus centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, club to submit a bid of around £69m for the defender.

The Blues are desperately in need of a defender this summer after the exits of a few of their players. Both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger made a move from Stamford Bridge to the Spanish League this summer.

Moreover, at 37, Thiago Silva would certainly need a backup although the centre-back is trying to remain at a top-level. Adding to that, Azpilicueta’s future too is up in the air with the Catalan giants, FC Barcelona reportedly interested.

The exit of defenders in the squad has forced manager Thomas Tuchel to look out for players in the transfer market. The club has identified Serie A outfit ace Matthijs de Ligt as a good reinforcement in the area.

De Ligt keen to join Chelsea

Matthijs de Ligt has played an instrumental role in the Turin-based club’s defence since his arrival at Old Lady. However, in the past few months, the defender and the club have not been able to agree upon a new deal.

Sources from the Italian media claim the centre-back is keen on making a move away from the club this summer. De Ligt’s contract with the club runs till 2024, however, an exit appears to be on the horizon.

Chelsea, too have begun talks with the Serie A outfit and could submit a bid of around £60m with £9m add-ons. Todd Boehly, the club’s new owner, and Tuchel are admirers of the defender and want him at the Bridge.

Juventus are open to facilitating a move for their centre-back but want players in return as a swap deal. The names of Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic have been discussed but nothing has been materialized yet.

It remains to see if the defender ends up joining Chelsea this summer or will he fulfill his contract.
