Chelsea to sell Azpilicuetta to Atletico amidst Barcelona interest

About Football Express UK

Chelsea are considering selling Cesar Azpilicuetta to Atletico Madrid rather than FC Barcelona. Barcelona had shown interest in Azpilicuetta with the player interested in the move as well. However, Chelsea does not want to do any business with Barcelona as they hijacked Kounde from Sevilla.

Azpilicuetta has been at Chelsea for a decade now and has been a staple in their lineup over the years. The Spaniard has been a dependable player for the last ten years and has continued to do so. The 32-year-old has made 474 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and has scored 17 goals and 53 assists during his time. Moreover, Azpilicuetta was handed the captaincy role after Gary Cahill’s departure a couple of seasons ago.

Azpilicuetta is in the last year of his contract and wants to leave his home country. The veteran defender wants to Barcelona and the club has been monitoring his situation for years. Although Barcelona are in the run, Atletico are not far behind as well.

Barcelona interested

Barcelona have a strong interest in the defender as Xavi is not impressed with Sergino Dest’s performance throughout the last season. Moreover, Dani Alves is leaving the club as a free agent reiterating the need for a new right back. Barcelona feels Azpilicuetta is the man for the job and could also help in giving competition to Dest.

Although Azpilicuetta wants a move towards Barcelona, Chelsea might block the move as Tuchel spoke his mind some time ago. According to reports, Chelsea prefers to sell Azpilicuetta to Atletico Madrid.

Although Atletico Madrid does not need a new right back as they have Nahuel Molina. Atletico might pull back from the race considering their financial situation and would try to strengthen other parts of their squad.
