Chelsea target new defender in the upcoming transfer window

About Football Express UK

Chelsea would be reportedly signing a new defender for the next season as per their current situation. The choice would be to sign Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich or Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. Thomas Tuchel has employed a back-three defense and thus, he needs more options in the defensive department.

Both the players have not been given an opportunity to extend their contracts in their respective clubs. The Blues might be thinking of bolstering their defence as the current Champions League winners concentrate on their next season.

Sule and Varane have their contracts expiring next year. However, the West London club faces huge competition from rivals, Manchester United, who are also keen on getting these deals done.

Sule or Varane may be the defender Chelsea needs right now!

The defensive department was firing at all cylinders in the 1-0 Champions League final victory against Manchester City. However, the subsequent injuries and aging of Thiago Silva have been a concern for the team and it would be a wiser option to sign a new centre-back.

Also, Fikayo Tomori, who is currently on loan at Italian giants AC Milan, must be thinking about a permanent deal.

Raphael Varane has also spoken about his uncertainty about his future at Los Blancos. The 28-year-old Frenchman has made 360 appearances so far for the last season’s La Liga champions. However, club president Florentino Perez hinted that he might be leaving the Spanish club. He said,

“Varane? I’m happy with our team. If players don’t want to stay at Madrid they can leave.”

Bayern Munich said goodbye to their coach Hansi Flick and appointed Julian Nagelsmann as the coach for the next season. Consequently, many key players like Sule and David Alaba are on their way out of the record Bundesliga champions.

Flick was a great admirer of the 25-year-old versatile defender. He has made 133 appearances for Die Roten. But, now as the coach changes, he might be on his way leaving the club. Or else, he might be facing competition from Dayot Upamecano, who was signed by the Bavarians from RB Leipzig.

The German defender would be a wiser option to be considered by the Pensioners as he is still in his peak form. Sule has experience in winning the Champions League and thus, he could help them win more trophies.
